Many people have asked me how much technology is involved in getting an in-house lead gen program started. The answer depends on how involved you want it to be. You can take advantage of the technologies currently available with some of the larger networks such as Commission Junction, clixGalore and affiliateprograms.com. The tracking is hosted by them so you need to simply apply the tracking code information they give you to your "success page". This will give you a foundation as you built out your own lead gen program. Start small and get your learning. Once you have tested offers and different banners and you know what is working you are ready to look at a long-term strategy that might involve hiring a developer or consultant to custom tailor your platform based on your business or your needs.

rodnie you can get really carried away with tracking and actually it can become not one full time job but several depending on how large your organization is and how many keywords you are managing. If you are justing getting into this I would suggest Yahoo and Google since they have their own tracking elements that do break down the conversions by keyword. What you learn from this could also assist you in the type of banner or even off-line advertising you do based on what particular keywords are coverting best for you. If you have the resources you also might want to consider running several landing pages in your ppc campaign to determine which page has the highest click throug to your application or lead form

We tried this and we decided to leave it to the pros. There were too many technical moving parts to track all the places we were advertising and we really spent too much time trying to figure out where the traffic was coming from that it was taking us away from our tasks as hand. We do have the google tracking in place and that is working out fine for us but without hiring a person we can't concern ourselves with the partner programs. Besides some of these companies want an arm and a leg to sign up with them and them monthly maintenance fees!!!
